Paralegal - Metropolitan Maryland office

Duties: Perform telephone and walk-in intake; conduct outreach and community education; assist attorneys with management of case files; conduct legal research; draft memoranda and other documents; represent low-income clients in administrative law cases under the supervision of an attorney. Areas of practice include, but are not limited to housing, consumer, bankruptcy, public benefits, and education law.

Qualifications: Excellent phone and people skills required. Proficiency in legal research helpful. Experience in assisting low-income persons desired. Ability to multi-task. Proficiency/experience with legal case management systems helpful. Comfortable with using technology in an office environment. Willing to learn areas of law and apply that knowledge. Spanish language proficiency especially desirable.

Salary: $29,000 and up depending on education and experience.

Location: Riverdale, Maryland

Case Specialist

Duties: Provide case management services to Legal Aid clients who are facing eviction. Case management may include conducting client needs assessments, referrals to appropriate service providers including providers offering eviction prevention funds, and the arrangement, coordination, monitoring, and delivery of services related to meeting identified needs and helping clients obtain housing stability. Component services and activities may include: counseling, developing, securing, and coordinating services; monitoring and evaluating client progress; assuring that program participants’ rights are protected; and developing individualized housing and service plans which will include a path to permanent housing stability.

Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Social Work preferred. Strong client advocacy skills, flexibility, and good interpersonal and writing skills. Spanish language proficiency is desirable.

Salary: $24,384 and up, depending on experience.

Social Work Supervisor

Duties:  Legal Aid and the Field Education Program of the University of Maryland School of Social Work began this field placement project in September 2009.  The Social Work Supervisor supervises up to four clinical social work students who assist clients with various issues, including, but not limited to, crisis and case management and referral, coordination of benefits (including health care), and homelessness.  In addition, students may provide expert testimony as part of the litigation process and social work assessments for purposes of trial.  The program will be funded during times when the University of Maryland is not in session.  During those times, the supervisor will have sole responsibility for pending cases handled by the unit.

Qualifications:  Master’s degree in Social Work (Licensure at least LCSW).  Experience providing clinical case management as well as mental health services helpful.  Supervision and leadership experience preferred.  Good interpersonal and writing skills required.  Spanish language proficiency is desirable.

Salary:  $27,000 and up, depending on experience.
