Metropolitan Maryland Office
Paralegal Briana Morris from Maryland Legal Aid's Metropolitan Maryland office achieved a victory for a client in a Social Security case. The client is 11 years old and had been receiving Social Security Insurance (SSI) benefits for her Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), adjustment disorder, severe separation anxiety and other issues.
After conducting a medical review, the Social Security Administration (SSA) determined that the client's condition had improved and issued a notice of termination of her benefits. Briana prepared for the case by interviewing the client's mother and collecting the client's medical and school records. She then represented the client in a hearing at the local SSA office. The hearing examiner issued a decision, concluding that there had not been significant medical improvement, reinstating the child's SSI benefits. Briana received a kind e-mail from the client's mother to express her gratitude. It read, in part:
"I am so grateful to you for all of your support. I am so glad I didn't walk away. We worked hard and prevailed. Briana, in the midst of all of my sadness, I have hope, faith and a calmness. Life is not about waiting for the storm to be over..... IT IS ABOUT LEARNING HOW TO DANCE IN THE RAIN! I'm dancing!!!!!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!"
