As a member of the Maryland Bar, you are encouraged to contribute your fair share or one billable hour of free legal service per year. You can make a gift to Maryland Legal Aid or you can contribute your time through pro bono service. Maryland Legal Aid relies on attorneys like you to ensure that Marylanders in need have somewhere to turn. Needs assessment reports consistently show that only about 20 percent of the demand for civil legal services is being met. For more information on Legal Aid pro bono opportunities, contact Bobbie Steyer at 410-951-7737.
EQUAL JUSTICE COUNCIL
"…in our adversary system of criminal justice, any person haled into court, who is too poor to hire a lawyer, cannot be assured a fair trial unless counsel is provided for him. This seems to us to be an obvious truth."—Gideon vs. Wainwright, 372 U.S. 335 (1963).
The Equal Justice Council of Maryland was formed 13 years ago to make the work of Legal Aid possible by raising money from the private bar. For more information on supporting the work of the council by volunteering or making a donation through your practice, contact Anddi Gilmore at 410-951-7759.
EQUAL JUSTICE ASSOCIATES (EJA)
The Equal Justice Associates, Legal Aid’s young lawyers division of the Equal Justice Council, supports the efforts of Maryland Legal Aid by building a strong network of advocates who will serve as leaders in their profession, dedicated to advancing the cause of access to justice as a human right. EJA supports this growing community with professional development and mentorship opportunities that will give them the framework and skills needed to effect social change throughout their careers.
Equal Justice Associates can look forward to skills workshops, social/networking events, leadership development opportunities, pro bono work and philanthropic experience. Members who phase out of the Equal Justice Associates are well suited for governance in voluntary sector organizations. For more information please contact Audra Allen at 443-451-2888.
