Affordable Housing Preservation Program

Lack of affordable housing keeps low wage workers in poverty and exacerbates a host of social problems. We work with tenants in multifamily properties that are deteriorating or at risk of losing their subsidies to help them secure safe and decent homes, stabilize the property and improve conditions in the community. Our staff provides outreach and information to tenants in the properties and meets with tenants and determines their concerns regarding the housing. Where owners are restructuring their loans, tenants have  significant opportunities to obtain improvements to the property. When an owner decides to sell a property, staff works with a tenant group to try to find a purchaser who would retain its affordability. At the very least, we would ensure that tenants displaced by subsidy termination receive all of the benefits available to them to minimize the harm from displacement and to increase their chances of finding housing in comparable neighborhoods. If they are able to achieve a better and more permanent living arrangement this will allow them to put their efforts into pursuing education, finding and keeping a job, or caring for their children and grandchildren. We also work with the tenants to achieve community improvements such as better day care, community centers, and school situations.
